Family Compound Main House

Cornwall, VT

Built on the site of a former working farm, the main house is the central point of the plan anchoring the core of the space between the event lawn and barn to the south and the Guest house and private spaces to the north.  The building site sits on the edge of an escarpment with long views towards the north, south and east of working farm fields, grazed meadows, the Cornwall Swamp and the Green Mountains. Native Panton Stone is used for walls that link the architecture and tie the built environment into the slope. terraces of varying scale and orientation consisting of Bluestone and Champlain Black stone provide different experiences and levels of intimacy with rich plantings framing the edges.  A secretive hot tub terrace cut into the hill has dramatic views toward the Green mountains and a large firepit of Panton stone erupts from the ground at the edge of the Great lawn.
