Private Residence
Ferrisburgh, VT
The landscape Master Plan for this historic 19th century property was prompted by the collapse of a 15′ high terrace retaining wall defining an arrival auto court. The main house, which has panoramic views of Lake Champlain, was built of Panton Stone quarried from the site with remnant connections to the lake and adjoining spaces. The new design reflects the unique history of the landscape and architecture while introducing contemporary concepts. The auto court wall was highly engineered for longevity and the once solid wall framing the court was opened up with piers and rails to maximize views to the lake and mountains. On the back side of the house there is a quiet terrace with Lake Champlain Black stone paving adjacent to a vast wrap-around porch. Extensive ledge was exposed during construction which inspired the design of an organic stone amphitheater overlooking the lake with planting beds sweeping across the slope through the outcroppings with intermittent stone seating and steps to the lake below.
