Agnes R. Katz Plaza
Pittsburgh, PA
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s Agnes R. Katz Plaza is arguably one of the most recognizable spaces in the city. Drawing inspiration from Pittsburgh’s rising topography, the late American artist and sculptor Louise Bourgeois created the 25-foot bronze fountain centerpiece of this 23,000 square foot public plaza. The sculpture is notable as the largest public art commission by Bourgeois. Granite “Eyeball” benches by Bourgeois add seating and further intrigue to this unique plaza. Pleached Little-leaf Linden trees line three sides of the plaza and give protection from the outer city and provide shade and intimacy to the space. Black granite cobbles create a textured plaza floor and granite benches are woven in between the Linden allees.. Completed in 1999.
