Williams College Museum of Art

Williamstown, MA

One of the final projects completed as Senior Designer for The Office of Dan Kiley was a major redesign of the entrance and public face of a major college art museum in collaboration with a permanent art installation by the artist Louise Bourgeois. Her vision was to have this series of her “Eyeball” sculptures floating among the crests and troughs of waves. Our design created a rolling, hilly lawn of landforms where the pairs of “Eyeballs” appear and disappear at varying vantage points. One of the many challenges to the project was wayfinding as a 1986 addition by the architect Charles Moore relocated the Main entrance to the side of the building with poor access and visibility. The design resulted in a sinuous path from a village sidewalk cutting through the mounds and sculptures to a new cobblestone courtyard with seating, signage and gathering capability.
