University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

Dallas, TX

On this project we worked closely with the artist, Joel Shapiro, in developing a strategy and location for a new art work to be installed at Seldin Plaza on the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX. Scale modeling in the artist’s studio and lots of experimentation were involved in placing the piece to avoid unnecessary contact, primarily with the visually impaired and to place it to the best advantage for overall viewing and access. The sculpture was placed on a slightly elevated rise created to add distance between the ground and the horizontal elements and the mound was framed by an oval stone band with appropriate warning textures for announcing proximity to the art. Improvements to the existing landscape were also developed to enhance the viewing experience.
